Weekly Mining News: 02-06-2024

1. India seeks Mongolia’s minerals, sidestepping Chinese routes for securing coking coal and critical minerals. India also eyes multiple mineral pacts with about a dozen countries in Africa
2. Coal India records 7.5% growth in production in May 2024 from 117.5 (last year) to 126.2 Million tons, offtake rises by 7.2% from 63.7 million tons last year to 68.2 million tons this year
3. NMDC earmarks ₹50,000-crore capex to double iron-ore production by 2030-31. Investments to be made towards mine enhancement, new mine bids and acquisitions.
4. Tata Steel earmarks capex of Rs 17,000 crore for FY25. 75% of spends to be in India, including for the ongoing expansion at Kalinganagar.
5. Study finds- No need for countries to issue new oil, gas or coal licences. Researchers say world has enough fossil fuel projects planned to meet demand forecasts to 2050 if net zero is reached.
6. Report says- Iran’s near-bomb-grade uranium stock grows. Report also says- Iran is enriching uranium to close to weapons-grade at a steady pace while discussions aimed at improving its cooperation with the U.N.
7. Body of labour recovered after 8 days in Ledo’s illegal rat-hole mining incident in Assam. The body of one of the three labourers trapped in the illegal rat hole mining in Ledo’s Tikok West has been recovered after 8 days.
8. Tata Steel’s Noamundi Iron Mine celebrates 100 years of sustainable mining. Tata Steel is celebrating the beginning of its centenary year since the inception of mining operations at the site. To commemorate this milestone, a logo launch event was organised today at Noamundi.
9. 9 drivers arrested for illegal mining in Baramulla, J&K on May 31, cracking a whip on illegal mining of minerals at Khanpora, Shrai, Kreeri and Mirchimar areas of Baramulla, Police seized 9 vehicles
